Artist Residencies Around the Province this Spring

Seven IBPOC/BIPOC dance artists affiliated wtih Dance West Network’s Residency project were provided space, technical and local resources to develop their work, and in return, artists offered studio showings, workshops and community conversations. Artists: ISAAC GASANGWA aka IZO DREAMCHASER, ERIKA MITSUHASHI, ANA SOSA, JESSICA McMANN/Wild Mint Arts, SOPHIE DOW with collaborator Keria Shaw, MARCO ESCCER, LINDSAY DELARONDE. Hosted by: Changemakers Educational Society and Coast Mountain College, Method Dance Society and KNOX Performance Centre, Venables Theatre, Bulkley Valley Concert Association.

GATHERING ON SALT SPRING ISLAND

In April 2024, a group of community engaged artists, who also work as Community Dance Connectors with Dance West Network, gathered in a residency for creative exchanges on the lands of the xʷənen̕əč (Salt Spring Island). Funded by Deux Mille Foundation. At the same time, the Matriarchs Uprising Festival, founded by Olivia C. Davies/O Dela Arts to celebrate contemporary dance by Indigenous women, was hosted at the ArtSpring Theatre, offering Hoopdance and Metis Jig workshops, as well as beautiful performances by: Beany John (“The Awakening,”) Yvonne Chartrand (“Eagle Spirit,”) and “Carriers & Keepers of the Ancestral Portals” by Beany John and Sophie Dow, and a collection of Indigenous short dance films. CDC Robbyn Scott, xʷənen̕əč territory (Salt Spring Island) offers the first Being a Forest Workshops!“The inaugural Being a Forest workshop for children took place on May 6th in collaboration with the Wild Haven outdoor science-driven learning school. Through an exploration of the five senses, I introduced body awareness utilizing dance/movement, voice/sounds and imagination as tools to connect with nature in a new way. The workshop, attended by young students aged 8 years, was held in the forest and meadow of the Climate Adaptation Research Lab (C.A.R.L.) site at Maxwell Creek on Mt Maxwell (Hwmet’utsum), Salt Spring island. Thanks to the recent support and connection from Transition Salt Spring for my Being a Forest project, I was invited by Wild Haven’s founder, Gigi Jobb, to bring movement explorations to these young student- scientists, who actively engage in outdoor activities with a focus on forest restoration.” “Getting to weave that circle of wholeness today was one of my highlights of the year!” - Gigi Jobb, Wild Haven founder In May and June, Robbyn will be offering 3 more workshops in the schools and in the community. Dance West Network’s Re-centering/ Margins Residency alumni Jennifer Aoki, Sophie Dow, Isaac Gasangwa, Robyn Grant-Moran, Aryo Khakpour, Nick Miami Benz, Mohammed Rashead participated in a four-day residency in The Bronx, NYC, March 22-26, 2024. Artists participated in sharings and exchanges with artists and alumni from the Dancing Futures Residency in The Bronx, and participated in performances with impromptu community dancing, seeing other shows, taking class, meeting artists, and the artists left with new creative ideas and connections. Board & StaffDance West Network staff and board members are participating in Pathways: Learn and Reflect, a year-long process to support arts and culture practitioners to learn, reflect and integrate equity and access more deeply into our work. Through individualized learning plans and one-on-one guidance, supported by amazing mentor Yun Jou Chang, they are finding new ways of thinking about and integrating learnings about equity and access into their work at DWN as well as beyond the organization and with the multiple communities in BC in which they connect. Monthly group meetings include Pathways participants from communities around the province and offer opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in rural and remote “BC”, and a shared commitment to find ways to continue working together.
