Ocean Roaring

Anya Saugstad

Project Description

‘Ocean Roaring’ is a two part site specific dance project that follows the stories of six women on the shore of the ocean at dusk. Part one of this project is a site specific performance piece with live dance and violin. Part two is a site specific installation, in which a film of the work is projected onto fabric hung slightly in the water. The work can function as a pair of projects with the live performance by day and the film by night, or individually. ‘Ocean Roaring’ was created on the beach in Vancouver BC in 2019, and was made into a film in July 2020, aiming to continue to share the work through COVID-19. The piece focuses on tireless and urgent movement as a means to describe distance and longing between people and the land, and directs attention to the ocean as a scarce and vital resource.

Artist Profile

Anya Saugstad and her collaborators work and live on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlil̓ ilw̓ ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples (Vancouver BC). They focus on telling their stories through dance, music, and film, and have created numerous live performance projects over the past few years together. They are interested in creating raw and honest performance that tells the stories of women through physical and exhausting movement. As a group, they have shared their work through platforms including Vines Art Festival, Simon Fraser University, Youth In Motion (Shadbolt), F-O-R-M Festival, and BLOOM (Mascall Dance).
