Albatross and Leftovers

Company 605

Project Description

"Albatross" (excerpt), created through an international collaboration between Company 605 and Brussels-based artist German Jauregui, is a physically grueling piece which pulls apart a single moment to experience its contents in expanded time. Like two parts of one’s self, in continuous motion and perpetual contact, two bodies inhabit a single person's trajectory through a test of endurance, simultaneously becoming one another’s obstruction and support to keep moving forward.

Performed by Josh Martin, "Leftovers" began as an investigation into how the body holds separate memory banks in muscle tissue, bones, and organs which all store their own accounts of past events, actions and trauma in ways that keep this collected information inaccessible to the mind. In a constant effort to disconnect movement from thought, the dance is an attempt to externalize the inner moments of body recall, and an expansion of what gets churned up in the retrieval.

Company Profile

Led by artistic co-directors Lisa Gelley and Josh Martin, Company 605 is an arts organization based in Vancouver, on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded Indigenous territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. With an expanding repertoire of diverse works, the company has performed from coast to coast in Canada as well as internationally: American Dance Festival, New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, The Cultch, Usine-C and L'Agora de la Danse, La Rotonde, DanceWorks, Live Art Dance, The Banff Centre, On The Boards' NWNW and Bumbershoot Festival, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Festival PRISMA, Festival Parentesis, Tempel Kulturzentrum and Regensburger TanzTage, BODY.RADICAL, M1 Contact and Sydney Festival. 605's co-directors have created commissioned works for several dance companies, including Ballet BC (Anthem, 2017). Their collaborations with filmmakers have allowed 605’s dance-on-screen work continues to be shared globally (at over 45 festivals).

Outreach Activities + Community Engagement

With each work that Company 605 has produced, extensive dissemination has always been a goal, with the objective to create further opportunities for the artists to connect with as broad and diverse a public as possible. This continues to include searching out ways to share and demonstrate the artists’ choreographic/movement practice on a more intimate level, and planning outreach activities that can become integral to developing a sense of familiarity and appreciation of dance, and the building future audience.

Company 605 accommodates pre-show chats, talk-back sessions, student matinees, lectures, etc and offers a variety of workshops and masterclasses (all-ages from youth to professional) often based around concepts, thematic ideas and movement techniques found in within its work. However, we also endeavour to work closely with presenters to design outreach initiatives tailored to the specific communities visited, and invite new ideas. A current interest of the artists is to extend their stay in the visited community, either before or after their performance, to offer a Creation Lab – Working with a small/medium assembled group of local artists within an actual creative process, and collaborating with 605’s team to together build a new short creation with a show-and-tell to public.
