Grace meets power

Contemporary dance meets tradition in this performance inspired by Beijing opera, a renowned Chinese theatrical form recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Drawing from its visual language, symbolic gestures, and musicality, the show explores a rich tapestry of scenes: the graceful power of sword dances, the gentle rhythms of a young embroiderer’s rural life, and the flowing elegance of long sleeves set to timeless melodies. It all culminates in a striking martial duet between two heroines. Blending heritage and innovation, this work offers a fresh perspective on Chinese theatrical art through the language of contemporary movement.

Aurore Liang artiste et ses collaborateurs

Aurore Liang Artiste et ses Collaborateurs is a collective of Montreal-based artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, brought together by a shared commitment to cross-cultural creation and contemporary performance.

The group’s artistic practice is grounded in an ongoing exploration of traditional Chinese theater—particularly Beijing Opera—as a rich source of inspiration for contemporary expression.

Through a collaborative and experimental process, the collective reimagines the visual language, movement vocabulary, and symbolic storytelling of classical Chinese performance, merging them with modern aesthetics and individual perspectives.

The result is a distinctive artistic voice that bridges heritage and innovation—honoring tradition while transforming it to speak to the complexity and hybridity of today’s cultural landscape.
