En janvier 2019, Brandon Lee Alley et Racheal Prince ont donné vie à Dance//Novella pour rechercher et développer de nouvelles œuvres de danse qui rapprochent la danse de la nature humaniste. Nous croyons qu'en développant des histoires et des concepts sociétaux audacieux qui défient l'interprète et le spectateur, nous pouvons engager positivement l'humanité tout en partageant nos histoires au 21e siècle. Une grande partie de ce qui inspire Dance//Novella est l'idée de collaboration, non seulement avec d'autres artistes de danse, mais aussi avec des partenariats interdisciplinaires qui mettent au défi et motivent tous les artistes impliqués.
Après avoir passé de nombreuses années à apporter leurs voix artistiques à des créations dans des compagnies de répertoire, Racheal et Brandon ont réalisé qu'ils avaient un intérêt commun à développer leurs propres voix chorégraphiques. À l'origine, le duo a commencé à chorégraphier de manière indépendante, en travaillant avec l'Arts Umbrella Dance Company, le Ballet BC et le Hubbard Street 2 de Chicago. Ce n'est que lorsque Racheal a assisté Brandon pendant sa création avec Arts Umbrella qu'ils ont réalisé à quel point leur partenariat pouvait être bénéfique. C'est ainsi que Dance//Novella a émergé.
En septembre 2019, D//N a présenté "Imprinted" à 12 Minutes Max Vancouver. Il s'agissait d'un regard approfondi sur la coercition et ses nombreux synonymes. Depuis, Dance//Novella a réalisé de nouvelles œuvres pour la LamonDance Company, l'Alberta Ballet School et Arts Umbrella PrEp. Ces quatre œuvres ont influencé la croissance de Dance//Novella et ont été des expériences inestimables.
En 2020, le danseur et chorégraphe Richard Walters, basé à New York, a rejoint l'équipe de Dance//Novella en tant que collaborateur et artiste de la danse. Richard a été présenté aux côtés de Brandon pour une nouvelle commande de "Men In Dance". Le film a été un succès et Dance//Novella a été invité à revenir au festival pour la saison 2021/22.
Dance//Novella est fier d'être le chorégraphe résident de Lamondance pour la saison 2021/22. À ce jour, D//N a créé deux œuvres pour Lamondance, Buzzing in Peach Trees et Syn. Sous la nouvelle direction de Medhi Walerski, D//N s'est vu offrir un poste d'artiste en résidence du Ballet BC pour la saison 2021/2022.
Actuellement, Dance//Novella collabore avec des artistes de la communauté sourde. Ensemble, ils construisent une œuvre inclusive qui sera accessible à la fois pour un public entendant et sourd. D//Novella est très heureux d'avoir l'occasion de collaborer avec Chis Dodd (directeur de Sound-OFF), Caroline Hébert, Anna-Belle Hébert et Nigel Howard.

In January 2019, Brandon Lee Alley and Racheal Prince brought Dance//Novella to life with the intention to research and develop new dance works that move dance closer to humanistic nature. We believe that by developing daring societal stories and concepts that challenge the performer and viewer, we can positively engage humanity while sharing our stories in the 21st century. A large part of what inspires Dance//Novella is the idea of collaboration, not only with other dance artists but cross-disciplinary partnerships that challenge and motivate all artists involved.
After spending many years contributing their artistic voices towards creations in repertoire companies, Racheal and Brandon realized they had a shared interest in developing their own choreographic voices. Originally, the pair began choreographing independently, working with Arts Umbrella Dance Company, Ballet BC and Hubbard Street 2, Chicago. It was not until Racheal assisted Brandon during his creation with Arts Umbrella that they realized how beneficial their partnership could be. Thus, Dance//Novella emerged.
In September 2019 D//N debuted “Imprinted” at 12 Minutes Max Vancouver. It was an in-depth look into coercion and its many synonyms. Dance//Novella has since made new works for LamonDance Company, Alberta Ballet School and Arts Umbrella PrEp. All four of these works influenced the growth of Dance//Novella and were invaluable experiences.
In 2020, New York based Dancer and Choreographer Richard Walters joined the Dance//Novella team as a collaborator and dance artist. Richard was featured alongside Brandon for a new commission by Men In Dance. The film was a success and Dance//Novella was invited back to the festival for the 2021/22 season.
Dance//Novella is proud to be Lamondance’s 2021/22 resident choreographer. To date D//N has made 2 works for Lamondance, Buzzing in Peach Trees and Syn. Under the new direction of Medhi Walerski D//N has been offer a position as Ballet BC’s Artist in Residence for the 2021/2022 season.
Currently Dance//Novella has been collaborating with artists from the Deaf community. Together they are building an inclusive work that will be accessible for both a hearing and Deaf audience. D//N is extremely fortunate for the opportunity to collaborate with Chis Dodd (Director of Sound-OFF) Caroline Hébert, Anna- Belle Hébert and Nigel Howard.
