Dust
Francesca Frewer & Erika Mitsuhashi
Project Description
A thought-provoking multidisciplinary performance piece which incorporates contemporary dance, live sound, new media, and striking designs to investigate themes of volatility, change, decay, and the unbound. Inspired by the poetry of Anne Carson, "Dust" uses movement, text and powerful visual effects to reveal the gradual undoing of the performance space, and of the performer herself. Created by dance artists Francesca Frewer and Erika Mitsuhashi, and performed by Frewer, the work is a collaboration with Adam Asnan (sound), Nellie Gossen (textiles), and Daniel O'Shea (new media).
Created with support from the Canada Council for the Arts, The Dance Centre, PAUL Studios Berlin, and Left of Main/plastic orchid factory.
Artist Profile
Francesca Frewer and Erika Mitsuhashi are contemporary dance and performance artists with a collaborative practice based in Vancouver. They have been creating work together for the past three years.
Situating their work across dance and theatre, they create engaging, movement-focused works with strong formal and aesthetic emphases. Their work takes a wide view of the form of dance, considering it as a device within the broader context of performance. Through a focus on deep embodiment, they ground their work in the immediacy of the body to create a viscerally palpable atmosphere, then use familiar theatrical devices to add contextual framework and formal clarity. Their work both subverts and takes advantage of the magic of theatrical artifice to create performances that are at once strange, exciting, and unsettling. Through collaborations with sound, projection, textiles, and set design artists, they create multi-dimensional works that spans across mediums.
