Mis Hermanas: Thicker Than Water My Sisters And I

Truly a BC story

Through dance, music, narration, video and still projections, Mis Hermanas tells the story of eight Mexican sisters growing up in Northern Mexico and bound forever by tragedy. They moved later to the city – where until this day – they meet every Tuesday for coffee, only one of them left home to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer and now she wants to tell her story before the Westcoast rains wash away her memories.
This is a story of an enduring love, family traditions and values, lost and newfound dreams – the personal story of artistic director Rosario Ancer – which take our audiences in a journey from Mexico to Spain and from Spain to Canada. So many audience members related very strongly to the story of immigration and resettlement which is at the core of this work. This production reflects contemporary Canadian culture.
Performed by Spanish, Mexican and Canadian flamenco artists - Mis Hermanas was presented in partnership with The Roundhouse Recreational and Arts Centre to sold out houses and critical acclaim in May 2008, an after-show artist-audience talk-back and free lecture “The ever evolving Art of Flamenco: New developments in Contemporary Spanish Dance”, given by guest scholar from Spain Laura Kumin.

Rosario Ancer was awarded the 2009 Isadora Award for the creation of Mis Hermanas.

Mis Hermanas completed a successful Mexican tour in 2010 and a British Columbia/Yukon in 2018.
