Jhoely Triana Flamenco Ensemble
Jhoely Triana
Project Description
Jhoely Triana Flamenco Ensemble will perform a 60 minute Spanish Tablao cafe style show featuring singing (cante), guitar (guitara) and dance (baile). The focus of the show is to present flamenco in its purest form, a simple stage with the focus being on the ensemble (cuadro). The dancer will perform Sevillanas (regional dance from Sevilla) and Fandangos (regional dance from Huelva), a solo called Alegrias which expresses feelings of happiness, a solo called Solea which expresses feelings of sorrow and pain and a solo called Garrotin which is fun and festive. In between the dances there will be musical interludes where the musicians each present singing (cante) and guitar (guitara) solos to showcase their virtuosity. These interludes give the dancer a chance to do a costume change.

Choreographer and Key Collaborators
Created by Jhoely Triana
Musicians yet to be determined. I have worked with various professional flamenco musicians in Vancouver and Victoria. Musicians would be chosen based on availability for set dates. I would hire a singer, a guitarist and either a percussionist (cajon) or palmista (hand clapping). Flamenco music is adapted from various traditional musical forms known as palos which then are interpreted through improvisation. The choreography is the dancer’s interpretation of set movements patterns with flexibility to improvise to match the music. My mentors are Oscar Nieto and Kasandra Lea from Al Mozaico flamenco who are my cultural advisors and outside eye. They have given me permission to perform these works based on their choreographies.
Community Engagement
I believe my interactive lecture demonstration can be collaborative with local community members. It can be adapted to suit the space and audience of a specific venue. I would like to hold a lecture/demonstration of the work to help educate audience about the history of flamenco, the cultural roots of the Romani people who created flamenco, the different parts of flamenco (guitar, singing, dance, palmas), the different song forms (palos) and meaning of spanish words. This would be an all ages, free event that would last about 15-20 minutes long and include some easy to follow interactive activities of hand clapping, call and response (jaleos) and hand movements (floreo) which can be done sitting or standing. These outreach activities can be done live, or as short segments for online audiences. By helping audiences understand what they are watching, it helps them enjoy what they are watching and connect more personally with it.

Technical Requirements
The performance can be done in a small intimate setting with no amplification or it can be performed to a larger audience which requires amplification. If performed for a larger audience, it would need to be amplified, the performance requires 3 microphones. One for guitar, singing and percussion/palmas. The musicians require a monitor to be able to hear themselves. If in a theatre with lighting available, some standard colour wash with some gobo patterns to emphasize mood are nice. A tap floor that is preferably mic’d is best for larger audiences. We would also need 4 chairs. If the performance is done outside or in a small space, it doesn’t need to be amplified. I do have a small dance floor which is 2.5 feet by 4.5 feet (folds in half) that can be used for small intimate settings. Natural outdoor lighting has worked for small shows or some simple lighting to light up a small stage is good.
Technical Residency
1 hour of sound/lighting tech if in theatre. If smaller venue, just a quick sound check for the musicians is needed.
