I remember...

I remember… is a new work in progress created and performed by award-winning dancer & choreographer Joe Laughlin. At 62, Laughlin is a senior Canadian artist who’s been performing for over 40 years and this piece is an exploration of a dancer's aging body and how that informs his art now and into the future. Incorporating dance, storytelling and video, I remember… is a deeply emotional and at times very funny reflection on aging in our anti-aging culture. The poetic text is staged, alongside choreography set to a Contemplation by Kate Potter and Dirje Childs and new music composed by Jesse and Joshua Zubot with juxtaposing video projection of Laughlin as a young dancer. Joe is remembering his life in dance, competitive gymnastics, working in South Africa, the Move It! community and the many talented artists he has worked with over the years. Lots of memories and life lessons communicated in a highly personal and authentic way. This show inspires everybody to continue moving forward and remember… you are never too old to do what you love.

“I still feel the same way I always have, inside. I still love dancing even though my body and physical ability is on the decline… and I’m barreling towards the end, quite literally. It’s the slow slide of your body into your 60’s and beyond. Everything is being taken from you and you have suffered a lot yet developed compassion and empathy and an understanding of time.” Joe Laughlin

Described as “wickedly sophisticated,” “unusual,” and “daring,” this Vancouver dance company speaks in a movement language all its own. Led by dancer and choreographer Joe Laughlin, the mission is to engage and inspire people through the medium of dance, pushing the edge creatively and artistically as professional artists while also strengthening community through dance.

Founding Artistic Director Joe Laughlin has created fourteen productions for the company, most recently DANCE:CRAFT, Joe: A Solo Show, 4OUR and Retrospective:25 Years. Presentations include the High Performance Rodeo, On the Boards, Festival of New Dance, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, FNB Dance Umbrella, International Children’s Festivals and the Seoul Marginal Theatre Festival, among many others. Numerous commissions include the National Arts Centre, Canada Dance Festival, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Ballet BC and the Johannesburg based company Moving into Dance Mophatong. Laughlin’s canon of over 65 works have been performed throughout Canada, in the US, UK, Europe, South Africa and South Korea.

Joe choreographs in contemporary dance and has also successfully crossed over into ballet, theatre, new media and television. His reputation for versatility is due as much to these forays as to his natural curiosity about life. His passion for working with communities led him to create Move It! in 2001. Honors include the Canada Council’s Jacqueline Lemieux Prize, Banff Centre's Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award and the BC Isadora Award for excellence in choreography.
