As an artist, I am interested in the ways tenderness manifests in my body, and its receptivity to deep connection, wisdom, and transformation. I am interested in ways we could communicate regardless of the medium of art/language. With this, I hope to unravel the narrative of being a part of the Filipnx diaspora; specifically of intergenerational exchange, lineage of resilience, concept of “home” and “KAPWA”, queerness and reclaiming spirituality. Currently he is working on his work called LAKBAY in collaboration with musician Miguel Maravilla.

LAKBAY

In his current piece “LAKBAY” (Tagalog word for Journey) Josh meditates on patterns, cycles and rhythms. Drawing upon his mother tongue of Tagalog, pivotal personal experiences and journeys into the natural world of the west coast rainforest, he intimately attunes into buried roots; breathing life into the undercurrents of their queer and filipinx identity. Rumble is proud to partner with New Works on the world premiere presentation of LAKBAY by Josh Ongcol & Miguel Maravilla. This piece was created earlier in March 2021 as part of Josh’s artist residency with Rumble and New Works.

This piece is done best with 3 different areas as there are 3 different parts of this piece. -“The backspace” , where the video projects into the sheet, and where the musician and dancer gets introduced. Sortof the subconscious space -”The room space” is usually where the living room furniture is, and where the transitional period of the piece takes place. -”A transcendence space” , where the performer and audience takes part in a sort of ritual or agreement. And it ends in a communion. The “coming back home” space. It could be designed in a theatre or an auditorium. Or it can physically be 3 different spaces For example a room , balcony and a backyard . or in terms of the theatre, an upstage area , downstage area, and the audience seating. Community Engagement Activities

We would like to bring out the local street dance and music scenes around the region we are in and facilitate a space of movement exploration and experimentation through music and dance improv and choreography Depending who shows up we would like to start to make scores around specific themes and conversations that would eventually culminate into a small presentation in which we would show to each other at the end of the workshop. It would be all ages primarily targeted towards the Filipinx movement artist and it would be free. Other than that we aim to reach through the greater filipinx community of all ages and backgrounds and gather and connect through the "karaoke portion" which includes a karaoke party and local Filipino catering, which we would seek and contact in the specific region. Karaoke will be done the pre and post show, and is the theme surrounding the performance. schedule : doors open 6p, food is served 6pm open karaoke 6pm , land acknowledgement speech 745 , performance start at 8pm - karaoke party and food 9pm- onwards. Filipino catering would be approximately $300

Specifically we would like to engage the filipinx community of the region , specifically movement artists and art enthusiasts. We would have this class for around 2 hours. Start with some movement explorations and warm up for 30 minutes and then get into the subject matter of filipino resilience facilitated and workshopped with a local speaker in the area. We hope to group people together and create a short choreography in which we would present to each other at the end of the workshop. We would need to find a space preferably the space in which we would be performing at. We would advertise this on social media and through community centers and filipinx cultural spaces and as well as keeping track of the sign ups. fee for the workshop for miguel and myself: $160 Studio fee: $100 Organizing fee / sourcing people / self promotion: $1000 Cost of the speaker / workshop leader on Filipinx resilience: $500
