In Conversation

One of Canada’s tap dance stars, Danny Nielsen combines dazzling technique, natural musicality, and a drive to constantly innovate with a heartfelt desire to honour the rich traditions of the form. In Conversation is a collaboration with renowned Bulgarian pianist/percussionist Kristian Alexandrov which delves into the symbiotic relationship between tap dance and jazz piano. Touching on new takes of old standards, original music, the two will co-create a performance drawing on everything from traditional and contemporary jazz to R&B, hip hop and rock. With lighting/video design from Jack Chipman (Vancouver Opera, Electric Company Theatre, Plastic Orchid Factory) and creative consulting and direction by Houston’s Matthew Shields (Post Modern Jukebox, Tapestry Dance Company) this show is a celebration of tap and musical artistry that will satisfy your senses both visually and audibly.

Community Engagment

In addition to connecting with dancers in smaller communities, I think also connecting with musicians in the area would be special as well, as it continues to bridge the gap between live music and dance. We would love to host a jazz jam in the area for both musicians and dancers alike.

Outreach Activities

A community workshop for local dancers at studios in the area with experience and no experience supported by live music (ages 10-20 years old). An adult class could be provided if there’s interest. Any level could be taught from absolute beginner to advanced. Also, a lecture demo at local schools with a basic tap lesson (Grade 1-12). I also want to take the time in these classes to show footage and teach some tap history. It is important for us to acknowledge the dancers that came before us and their contributions to the art form.

Fun fact, did anyone know the moonwalk was first done by a tap dancer named Bill Bailey in 1955?
