Beginnings
Ballet Vancouver’s debut touring program will consist of works by Artistic Director Joshua Beamish, Wen Wei Wang, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Tsai-Hsi Hung and Gitxsan fashion designer Yolonda Skelton.
The program includes Wen Wei Wang’s "Swan", an ensemble pointe work originally created in 2016. The work fuses elements of the classical ballet narratives Swan Lake and The Dying Swan with club culture. (18min)
"Romeo & Juliet Balcony Scene Pas de Deux”, one of ballet's most romantic scenes, finds a fresh interpretation through Beamish’s sweeping choreographic vocabulary. (12min)
Taiwanese choreographer Tsai-Hsi Hung’s “Self Portrait” explores unconventional beauty, while “Redemption” by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa depicts the journey of a fallen angel. (28min)
The evening concludes with excerpts from “Winterbourne”, a thrilling fusion of Indigenous fashion design and virtuosic balletic movement, co-created by Yolonda Skelton and Joshua Beamish. (12min)

Led by Artistic Director Joshua Beamish, Ballet Vancouver is a non-profit charitable ballet company based in Vancouver. The primary mandate of the company is to revitalize the city’s access to professional classical, neoclassical, and narrative ballet en pointe,
Ballet Vancouver is dedicated to the creation and presentation of innovative and engaging ballet productions. The company presents multiple home performances annually, in addition to national and international touring. Ballet Vancouver’s programming encompasses homecoming performances by locally trained ballet stars, coupled with appearances by renowned international ballet artists and ballet companies.
Ballet Vancouver would like to acknowledge that we gather and create on the traditional, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We recognize the profound, ancestral connection these Nations have to the lands and waters of what is now known as Vancouver, and express our sincere gratitude and respect as we live, learn, and work on these territories.

Community Engagement
General Technical Requirements: - marley floor
- lighting boom tree for "Redemption", photos to sent in advance
- "Swan" may need to be switched out for other rep, if the stage is too small
Required amount of time for tech set up: Ideally one day before, but this can be negotiated with each venue.
The following past activities most represent a deeper community engagement:
- Creations for local youth that act as an opener for our performance
- Choreographic mentorship for local youth or professionals
In the past, we have engaged in projects like these with Sunshine Coast DanceSociety, Chilliwack Cultural Centre, ArtSpring/Salt Spring Island, The CapitolTheatre/Nelson and Rotary Centre for the Arts/Kelowna, among others. We are open to collaborating with any age groups and with mutuallyinterested, and appropriate, community partners.
We prefer to craft these outreach projects in dialogue with the presenter and/or community partner. The structure and timeline of these projects impact fees, which would also be collectively determined.
Outreach Activities
We have a twenty year history of engaging with BC's regional communities in a multitude of formats. We are happy to work with each presenter to tailor the ideal outreach activity for their community.
Past examples have included:
- master classes for local dance students at various regional studios
- master classes with local school district dance programs
- community workshops for those new to dance (adult and youth)
- Q & A dialogues (post performance or in a classroom setting)
- Artist chats/salons with audience members before the performance
- Creations for local youth which act as an opener for our performance
- Choreographic mentorship for local youth or professionals
