Family Room

This project recreates a studio apartment through a set design of home decor where furniture is the foundation for three dancers to interact with. Each household object represents a family member of the performer’s while the location demonstrates the relationship to the performer. For example, a sturdy couch in close proximity could represent a close father relationship, while a distant fragile lamp could represent a mother who is no longer in contact. As the family dynamic between the performance, father couch, and mother lamp is performed, the audience will observe conflict, joy, and care that can appear between family members.

The dancers confront past traumas and relationships, in a recognizable home environment, through my lens of a child of Chinese immigrant parents. This work creates an inclusive, relatable landscape that offers the audience an opportunity to mirror and reflect upon their own family dynamics. The relatable context of family and history is an accessible entry point for those who have not yet engaged with dance.

A discussion facilitated by a registered counselor is integrated into the piece as part of the performance rather than a usual talkback. They will use their expertise to liaison the discussion between myself and the audience, and support the audience’s experience and any potential triggers that may arise. In addition, an online resource of counselors and emotional support will be provided through a QR code on the programs The links will prioritize counselors experienced with BIPOC and LGBTQ+ clients, and also low cost options.
