MascallDance is a creation, production, and education endeavour with 30+ seasons of works; many with extensive touring lives. “Our projects have blossomed from the two years of conversations about touring and audience relationship. The cancellations and shifts have actually opened up to new possibilities” -Jennifer Mascall, Artistic Director. Recently, we have pivoted to focus on art as social action with the audience as collaborators. After 50 years of creation, Jennifer still feels like she has just started her path as an artist. So her perspective is driven by curiosity. Annually we offer residencies, intensives, and workshops based on where our own body of knowledge meets the interests of participants. Our most influential teachers this year were dance artists, particle physicists, indigenous elders, Rabbis, and climate scientists. MascallDance is looking to build relationships with presenters now for three projects with a focus on: The Impossible has Already Happened, touring fall 2023.

Lurch

This durational collaboration examines a body and an inanimate object. The inanimate object is a large sculpture by BC sculptor Alan Storey - The creators are investigators, distinguished by mature work with big ideas. The collaborating performing ensemble spans four decades in age and diverse movement origins - from ballet and contact improvisation to drag, street, contemporary dance, and vogue. Four choreographers create short works inspired by the set piece but prompting different reactions and relationships. The full-length work will be produced for both live and online presentations with the potential to tour in galleries, large exhibition spaces, and outdoor public spaces.

Community Engagement Activities

We would offer master classes to any age group from young to old. Fee would go to the teacher and would be in the range of $80-100 a class. Accompanist might be needed or speakers for online music. We offer lectures about our work and a talk about the work before the show.

Community engagement might be an open rehearsal with a lecture by a scientist or artist in the area. The talking by the magnifies the choices made by the dancers and interprets both the movement and the words being spoken in new ways.
The work is available to any age group. We would work with the presenter to research the person to be invited and offer the invitation and fee to the collaborator.
