ROSARIO ANCER

Rosario Ancer (co-curator of Oct 7 Vancouver-based artist-curator conversation) is the artistic director of Flamenco Rosario, within which she creates work, runs a professional training company and hosts the Vancouver International Flamenco Company. The festival began in 1990, and to her surprise it sold out 2 months before. She soon encountered many misunderstandings about the art form of Flamenco, stating that she would receive comments like “ the crazy things that you guys do,” which she found perplexing. Despite her struggle to receive funding, she never doubted the power of Flamenco to move and connect. With their first CCA core grant in 2017, Flamenco Rosario now proudly receives core funding from the three government levels. This year, 2020, is the company’s 30th anniversary, and there are now six categories of funding for Flamenco, something in which Rosario played a huge role. The festival brings choreographers from Spain who, through a creative residency, mentor emerging dancers.
