Impermanent Flower

Salome Nieto is an accomplished contemporary dance artist renowned for her emotionally charged performances. Highly influenced by Butoh and Mexico’s surrealism, her transformative works explore themes of cultural identity, feminism, ritual and ceremony. In 2013, she co-founded pataSola dance, producing and choreographing the full-length show: Camino al Tepeyac (2014), Methodorphosis (2016), UMBRAL (2017), RIFT (2018) and Metamorphosis Butoh (2018), performing in Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Thailand. After this period, she created and performed Felicidad (2019), Ella (2020) and Impermanent Flower (2022). Nieto is the recipient of the 2017 VIDF choreographic award in recognition of her contributions to contemporary dance with her solo work. Nieto is currently pursuing an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at SFU. As an interpreter, Nieto has danced prominently with Kokoro Dance since 1996, Donna Redlick Dance since 2008 and most recently with Raven Spirit Dance.

Impermanent Flower

The work is a commission from New Works and premiered May 27 and 28, 2022, at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Rec Centre in Vancouver as part of New Works 2021-22 season.
Integrating Butoh with elements of storytelling and illustration, Impermanent Flower is a performance piece that explores ideas of happiness, impermanence, and beauty. It is inspired by a prominent image in Butoh: the wilting flower; the beauty of the flower is not on its blossom but in the process of dying.
"The presentation is a creative collaboration between Mexican and Canadian artists, showcasing Nieto’s mesmerizing choreography and performance alongside the masterful designs of Natalia Renteria. To step into Impermanent Flower is to be transported to a magical, mystical world. This production is inspired by children’s literature pop-up books and can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages". Stir Vancouver.
