Shelby Richardson MA ISA

Shelby Richardson is a choreographer, performer and dance educator located on the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh, in Northern BC. She holds of Masters of Anthropology in the Anthropology of the Arts, as well as BFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice with a focus on Indigenous Arts practice and curatorial studies in Canada. Shelby has curated and worked with students and professional artists across Canada and her practice is deeply immersed in community connections and collaboration.

Shelby founded Method Dance Society (Prince George 2019), an organization that provides resources and tools for professional contemporary dance artists in Northern BC, while also providing support for the creation and presentation of professional dance programming across the region. Since the company’s inauguration, Method has hosted several community and dancer-based workshops, live and virtual performances, as well as launching various community programs including the School District 57 Dance Program and the emerging Lheidli T’enneh Youth in Dance Program.

As her work spans several arts-based disciplines, Shelby aims to blend various components of the visual and performing arts by creating layered, introspective, and thought-provoking works that are facilitated by deep-set collaborative methodologies. In 2023 Shelby was named the first-ever Performing Arts Programmer for the Community Arts Council of Prince George and District and will be developing programming for venues across Prince George. Through her continued practice, Shelby focuses on programming and creation that is steeped in community engagement, cross-cultural collaboration, and the improvement of access to the Arts for Northern communities.
