The Impossible Has Already Happened

MascallDance

Project Description

This is about water: a new international co-creation by choreographers Claire O’Neil (New Zealand) and Jennifer Mascall (Canada), performed by New Zealanders and Canadians with storytelling by Andrea Grant. The project is an exciting departure for MascallDance and, following its’ New Zealand premiere, tours (in strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols) in New Zealand and Canada. The Impossible has Already Happened Newsletter and Podcast make it easy and engaging to follow the development of this project. Just email your interest to susan@mascalldance.ca to receive updates.  The work is being created via ZOOM rehearsals.  The entire ensemble unites in Vancouver for rehearsal in November 2021.  Please don’t hesitate to come down and take a look!

Company Profile

MascallDance is a creation/production company with 30 seasons of works under our belts. Our works adapt and change to numerous situations and evolving conditions and have been seen in Canada, Scotland, Italy and India. We’re a research and discovery enterprise, investigating movement and its intersection with other mediums, employing improvisation, experimentation, and somatic practice. We offer residencies, intensives, and workshops, fostering movement and choreographic knowledge in anyone curious about the body. The catalyst for our work is Jennifer Mascall, founder and Artistic Director. MascallDance is a resident of Left of Main in Vancouver’s Chinatown.

Community Engagement

Community engagement is central to the creation and presentation of this production.  A pre-tour visit delves into stories of the neighbourhood/region. The two choreographers visit. A performance picnic, talking about water, mingles our water stories with those of community members. Together we may discover ways to move with the story, or storytell while others move. Brief impromptu pop-up appearances that combine our artists with community members, appearing in unexpected places, on our second visit. Community members – i.e. musicians, storytellers, dancers, children, spoken word poets of all ages, etc – are invited to partner with the troupe. A podcast episode with local participation results from our visit. Whether our visit takes place digitally or live, MascallDance plans with you to build a fruitful engagement with your community. We are experienced, receptive and flexible partners. We anticipate online or socially distanced workshops for dancers, movers, and physical performers, customized to community groups, offering insight into how the production works thematically, and hands-on experience of choreographic excerpts. Offerings (live or online) can be tailored to suit all levels and most needs.

Outreach Activities

The Impossible has Already Happened is being created through ZOOM interaction, rehearsals in park settings, and studio work. At this early stage of the work, our audience includes anyone whose life is influenced by water – those who are stewards of water; consider water sacred; seek to shift their relationship with water, see it as endangered, environmentalists, scientists, activists, artists, fishers, gardeners, swimmers… and so forth. Through this work we intend to create conversations about water and sustainability. We invite anyone interested in hosting or knowing more about The Impossible has Already Happened to join the project’s mailing list by emailing susan@mascalldance.ca
