Translations

All Bodies Dance Project

Project Description

Translations is a sixty-minute, immersive performance for small audience groups created by All Bodies Dance Project in collaboration with VocalEye (Canada’s first live descriptive arts service for the blind). Accessible to both blind and sighted audience members, Translations is experienced through the sound of movement, the sensation of air moving, and images drawn in one's imagination from descriptive language. The piece explores the tools of live description with dance created specifically for the "non-visual senses." Translations invites diverse audiences to consider their own perceptions and the ways they typically access art and the world around. The work is choreographed and performed by a team of artists (with and without disabilities) who researched alongside artistic consultants from the blind community.

Company Profile

All Bodies Dance Project (ABDP) is an inclusive dance company located on unceded Coast Salish Territory (Vancouver, BC). Founded in 2014, ABDP brings together artists with and without disabilities to explore the choreographic possibilities of difference. The company seeks to address questions about the dancing body, community and connection. Who makes dances? Who has access to dance performances? How can dance reflect our values of diversity? By bringing together “standing dancers” with dancers who use wheelchairs and other mobility aids, ABDP’s work seeks to challenge the ideas of normalized dancing bodies and give artistic voice to an innovative community of dancemakers.

To date ABDP has self-produced five full-evening productions See & Be Seen (2015), TRACE (2016), DO MAKE SHOW (2017), Magic & Remembering (2018), Translations (2019) in addition to numerous site-specific, outdoor pieces. The group has also presented work at Fluid Festival (Calgary), SKAMpede (Victoria), Vines Art Festival (Vancouver), F-O-R-M Festival, Dancing on the Edge, Dance in Vancouver and partnered on presentation with New Works, The Dance Centre, ArtStarts and Made in BC: Dance on Tour amongst others.

This is one of the 200 exceptional projects funded through the Canada Council for the Arts’ New Chapter program. With this $35M investment, the Council supports the creation and sharing of the arts in communities across Canada.
