Writer: Luciana Freire D’Anunciação
Luciana Freire D’Anunciação (she/her) is a Brazilian-Canadian dance and performance artist who develops interdisciplinary works with video, photography, visual art installation, theatre and poetry.
Her works have been exhibited and performed in local and international institutions such as Kamloops Art Gallery (Kamloops, 2023), PushOFF Festival (2023), Dance Victoria (2023) Vancouver Fringe Festival (2015), Performance Biennale Deformes (Chile, 2014), European Performance Art Festival (Poland, 2011). She has also performed for local choreographer’s pieces such as Emmalena Fredriksson and Arash Khakpour's "You Touch Me" (The Dance Centre, 2022), Kelly McInnes’s "SHINY" at the Vancouver International Dance Festival (2019), and currently she is in creative process for Deanna Peter’s “not knot naught”.
Her works consider the bodily creative reciprocity that exists in the encounter with objects and subjects of curiosity, not only in art making but also community building. She is interested in the dynamic between individual and collective, spectacle and ritual, rational and intuitive. She holds a master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Arts from Simon Fraser University and has a background in somatic dance practices, contact improvisation, improvisation in dance, butoh, physical theatre, clown and dances from the African diaspora.
She recently published the book “Nunca Há Nada | There is Never Nothing” (Moniker Press, 2023) - a collection of bilingual poems that uses language as ways of documenting choreography. Currently she is an artist-in-residency at The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, where she develops new research and work while engaging with its community members.
