FUSION

Featuring Dance Artist: Jessica McMann

Revelstoke: February 24th and 25th, 2023

Fusion is a collaboration of Dance and Music. Cree Hoop-dancer Jessica McMann will premiere an original dance work composed and performed by Tunde Jegede, an internationally renowned Kora and African Classical composer. This combination of Indigenous dance and contemporary African Classical music is truly a unique event.

Jessica McMann and Tunde Jegede will lead workshops with Revelstoke High School students on the 24th of February. These workshops will explain and inform about this unique project and lead to a student lead performance at the end of the workshop.

On the 25th of February, there will be an evening performance at the Revelstoke Performance Arts Centre as part of the REVY.Live series.

Fusion is a unique melding of artistic genres. The collaboration of world-renowned composer and Kora Virtuoso Tunde Jegede, Cree hoop-dancer and musician Jessica McMann and international classical violinist Daniel Bhattacharya combine for a unique partnership of music and dance.”

I found that there was a deeper connection between the music written for Kora and that long history and my own dance steps of which have been danced for thousands of years. My favourite part of travelling to different communities is the opportunity to teach workshops to local Indigenous people and to have an opportunity to share during a talk-back at the performance. The extra activities built into this experience offers a chance for a deeper and more personal connection.
— Jessica McMann, Two spirit and Cree artists from Cowessess First Nation
To fuse African Classical music and Indigenous Hoop-dancing produced an event that truly embraced the concept of diversity and unity. The performances and workshops celebrated the connections between cultures and engaged all who were present. This project was made possible by the belief in reimagining performances along with commitments to integrate styles and genres.
