InsatiABLE Or-bits

Perception vs reality.
The world orbits around me.. Do I move with it or stand on the outside?
Day in and day out, stay afloat.
Are you moving? One step forwards or two steps backwards?

Sarah Kennedy

Sarah Kennedy graduated from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia with her degree: Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours majoring in Dance.
She is from Newmarket, Ontario and has been dancing since age four. Sarah grew up in a competitive studio environment competing in many dance styles including jazz, ballet, contemporary, tap, musical theatre and acro.
As an emerging artist, Sarah has performed in many works at SFU including Ascension 2018, 2020, 2021, PPE Waves, Ghost Forest, Myriad and Coda. She has performed in Dusk Dances from 2017-2022 and has toured with artists in Barrie and Hamilton, ON. Sarah has also performed for Get Out and Dance with her first choreographic debut in July 2024. During her career, Sarah has had the pleasure of learning from artists such as Megan Walker-Straight, Rob Kitsos, Judith Garay, Marla Eist, Emmalena Fredriksson, Justine Chambers, NiNi Dongnier, Charlotte Boye-Christensen and Sylvie Bouchard.
Sarah enjoys using dance as a form of expression and therapy. She appreciates the connections that can be made to real world experiences and how the audience can relate to her work. Her choreographic style often uses floorwork and staccato movements to bring her ideas to life as she uses her personal experiences as a catalyst.

Choreographer/performer: Sarah Kennedy

Audience Type: Youth, Young adults, Adults, and Seniors

Length of work: 8:00 minutes

Preparation time required on site: 30 minutes

Technical requirements required on-site: I will need a sound system with speakers. If this is being performed during the day, I will not need any lighting set-up. If this is performed in the evening, back and front lights will be needed.

Space required: 50' by 40' foot space. I will perform on grass in an open space.

Availability: I am available to tour this piece throughout the 2024-25 year. I am interested in the opportunity to showcase my work as an emerging artist. I am looking to form connections between local collectives and companies as well as collaborate with other artists. I value companies who allow dancers to explore their own work and provide opportunities for artistic expression. Touring would also provide me further performance opportunities as an artist. I aim to share my work with audiences, fostering connection while provisioning affordable opportunities for individuals to experience art.

Community Engagement

Building Community Through Dance
Dance is built on community and the collective movements that translate us through everyday life. Learn how to engage in a community piece in this interactive movement based class. Movement will be connected through collaboration and connecting with others. Each participant will be asked to add an action/ dance move to the piece. Participants will learn how dynamics, repetition and retrograde are important elements that can be used when creating a piece of choreography. Participants will bring their own ideas to the workshop and create a small dance that encapsulates the themes of unity/connection.
